Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter of their family. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner so that they could survive. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. But she quit school in the span of two years to explore a career in acting. This path was fraught with difficulties. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to get opportunities on stage. After a brief time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her position. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. The study of drama helped her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
